YOU’RE WRONG ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK THE WORLD LOOKS LIKE
Did you know, that for most of human history all mankind knew was poverty, this new phenomenal of wealth distributed as it is is very new.
What did the world use to look like?
Looking at life expectancy:
I’ve linked sources and you can check the dat out for yourself. Average life expectancy at birth from 1820 to 2015 using data compiled by Bourguignon and Morrisson (2002) and theWorld Health Organisation (2018). The United Nation’s (2015) forecast of life expectancy in 2030 is also included.
Someone born in 1820 could expect to live twenty-seven years on average.
Read that again. The life expectancy in the 1800’s was 27.
I WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD.
We cannot know the joys, challenges, triumphs, and disappointments that characterised the life of the typical person born in 1820. We do know, however, that this person’s life was short.
Brevity would have circumscribed their well-being. The advance in life expectancy is unmistakable. The upward bend around 1910 corresponds to the surge in population around that same date. We will associate a longer life with an improvement in well-being. It is reasonable to assume that the better nutrition and health that extended years of life facilitated interactions and experiences that enriched the quality of life.
By 2015, life expectancy had almost tripled to seventy-two years.
Look what happened to poverty
In the 1800’s 90% of the world lived in extreme poverty. And since the 1800’s you see a slow gradual decline.
Today it is 10%
This is what we think the world looks like
You look and see the the and see the the green& yellow dots on the right and everyone else on the left. You get an overall picture of this “West is Best” “White is Right” The West and all the rest” but what if I told you something interesting….
BUT, this is 1800, not the present day:
This is the present day:
As you can see the countries that used to be labelled in the red have gotten a lot of wealth and they like expectancy has gone up since then. The distribution of where the blue is also scattered. You still see a lot of yellow dots inside but they are not the only ones.
We have a different picture of the world now we need to upgrade our worldview.
With income being distributed like this:
With income being concentrated mostly in the middle in the olden times expected and particularly the most of the world population income would’ve been the first part of the job however today it’s in the middle of so most people live in the middle.
There was a sudden boom, why?
Things changed in the 1800s economists call this “The Great Hockey Stick of History”.
What specifically happened in America to make it the most powerful nation in the world?
Have a look at this:
